A Day at Joanna Furnace
It’s a fun, Involving and enriching summer program in game form. Here children of 2009 discover early American life on an 1800’s iron plantation.
Historic Joanna Furnace is located three miles north of Morgantown.
This age-appropriate fun experience immerses children,
ages 6 to 12, in the community life and workday of the 18th and 19th iron plantation known as Joanna Furnace. Eight two-hour repeating programs make it easy to fit into your schedule. Students can schedule into either a morning or an afternoon program. Optional lunches are available and may be ordered at the time of registration.
Registration is now open for children ages 6 to 12 to join one of the eight program times below:
Tuesday, July 7 9:30 to 11:30 or 1:30 to 3:30

Children learn the story of this iron-making community from our Experienced Instructors. Historic Joanna Furnace is one of America’s most important iron-heritage sites in Southeastern Pennsylvania,.
Students will enjoy playing our fun-filled history game and at the same time they will . . .
- Uncover archaeological processes at the Wheelwright shop and see the treasures unveiled at the site.
- Discover the tools used by the Blacksmith for forging iron.
- Learn how iron was made 150 years ago and see the many items made at Joanna Furnace.
- Visit the company store, see its goods and learn how the store served the community.
- Hear the story of the iron master and his mansion.
- Find out how charcoal was made to fuel the Furnace.
At the conclusion of the Furnace History Game, students will learn about and create their very own unique period craft which they can take home.
Program Details
- Registration fee . . . $6.00 per student, $4.00 per adult.
Groups of ten or more students . . . $5.00 per student.
- Students need to register in advance for only one two-hour session no later than two weeks prior to scheduled program (see attached registration and enrollment form).
- See registration form for option lunch information.
- Morning students should plan on arriving by 9:15, a.m. in order for the program to begin promptly at 9:30.
- Afternoon students should plan on arriving by 1:15 p.m. in order for the program to begin promptly at 1:30.
- Parents must pick up students no later than: 11:45, morning program and 3:45 afternoon. program. Those a.m. students having the optional lunch should be picked up no later than 12:30.
- The program will continue rain or shine. In the event of rain, the program will be held inside the charcoal house and mule stable museum.
- The students will explore the Mule Stable, Wheelwright Shop archaeological site, the Blacksmith Shop, the Casting House/Blast Furnace Complex, the Charcoal House Museum, the Store/Office and the site of the Ironmaster’s Mansion . . . all part of the Historic Joanna Furnace Complex.
