Mission - Developing camaraderie among men with an interest in mechanical
technology and wood craft related fields while working on special projects
of interest.

Gatherings
Every Thursday, from 9AM to 4PM, the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG), meets in the
Mechanical Technology area of historic Joanna Furnace. Lunch is served to
all in attendance for a donation.

Projects

  • Sawmilling
Every spring until winter sets in, the sawmill at Joanna is running and producing rough-cut lumber for future use in projects.
  • Property Care
Seasonal work continues year round and the faithful OTHG volunteers take care of numerous projects related to grounds care, repairs and maintenance.
  • Carpentry
Carpenters are currently reviewing plans to reconstruct an authentic Joanna Furnace charcoal wagon. Our carpenters have already reconstructed a 19th century ore wagon, sled, and a two wheeled cart that is on display at our events.
  • Line Shaft Operation
The Mechanical Technology Building at Joanna Furnace features a period line shaft powered by a 40HP Case Power Unit. Volunteers and visitors can learn how to operate vintage equipment including; a Post Drill, Drill Press, Profile (Copy) Machine, Wood Lathe, Mortis Machine, Dove Tail Machine, Stone Mill, Corn Sheller, and a Wheel Hub Lathe.

Future Projects

  • Wheelwright Shop
New construction of a replica of the Wheelwright building is currently being planned. This building will be constructed using methods authentic to the 19th century and with as much lumber from our sawmill as possible. Today you will see the active archaeological dig-taking place in advance of reconstruction.
  • Underground Line Installation
All overhead utility lines are being placed underground. This project
continues as materials are prepared by volunteers.
