World War II Encampment & Children’s Games

Step back in time on July 17th and learn about World War II from approximately 50 living history historians who will transform the historic Joanna Furnace iron plantation into a 1940’s war setting. The encampment will take place on the grounds from 9 am to 5 pm.

On the military side you will learn how our heroes of yesteryear fought to preserve our great country. Visitors can meet and talk to re-enactors who are representing the US Marines in the Pacific, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne, 2nd Armored Division – 82nd Reconnaissance, and the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalions. Plus you will hear from a World War II re-enactor talk about “Armia Krajowa” -- aka the Polish Home Army. On-going vehicle and weapon demonstrations’ will also take place throughout the day in the military camps.

Want to get firsthand information about the war? Local veterans who served in World War II will be present at the event and talk about their experiences; one of which is a woman marine with her own unique display.

After visiting the men and women who protected us from afar you will experience what life was like on the mainland. Re-enactors from the Reflections of World War II, specializing in recreating the 1940’s home-front, will be displaying memorabilia from the period and talking about how Hollywood movie stars influenced what was going on at Joanna Furnace during the war. There will also be a period home in which visitors can stroll through and see how we lived 65 years ago. Interested in the 1940’s fashion? The Home Front re-enactors will offer two fashion shows during the day. At 11 am - Fall/Winter Fashions and 2 pm - Spring/Summer Fashions.

Children and adults alike can experience picnic games from the depression and the World War II era. At 10 am and 3 pm children of all ages can partake in a lollipop race, doggie race, lemon toss, wheel-barrow race, and a kangaroo Holocaust Survivor Severin Fayerman to speak at World War II eventballoon race. Prizes will be given to winners!!

At 4 pm a very special presentation will be given by a Holocaust survivor, Mr. Severin Fayerman. Severin, who endured several Nazi Concentration Camps during World War II, will speak about the horrors that his family faced during the war and how he ultimately turned his life into a success. His book “A Survivor’s Story” will also be available for sale at the event.
